Complications of varicose veins

Varicose veins is not so dangerous as its formidable complications.

The most common complication of varicose veins is thrombophlebitis, since, often, it develops against the background of varicose veins, phlebologist uses the term varicothrombophlebitis. With thrombophlebitis, blood clots form inside the vein, as a result of which the venous blood flow is completely disrupted. The main symptoms of thrombophlebitis are: bloating, tightening and hyperemia of the skin at the site of the formation of a thrombus, soreness and fever along the vein.

If the following symptoms occur, you should immediately contact a vascular surgeon or phlebologist. Only after examining a specialist and conducting a duplex scan the further treatment tactics be determined.

Transfascial vein thrombosis is a serious complication of varicose veins, which develops as a result of untimely diagnosed and insufficiently treated varicothrombophlebitis. With this complication, blood clots from the saphenous veins enter the deep veins through perforating veins (veins connecting the superficial and deep venous systems). This can lead to the development of deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism.

The next formidable complication is an extremely dangerous disease - pulmonary embolism. In pulmonary embolism, thrombotic masses completely or partially close the lumen of the pulmonary artery. Often, these are blood clots that “come off” from the veins of the lower extremities. PE is manifested by sharp pain in the chest or between the shoulder blades, asphyxiation, loss of consciousness is possible. This disease is treated in the conditions of cardiac surgery departments or intensive care units using thrombolytic therapy or surgery.

Varicose eczema is a complication of varicose veins, accompanied by severe edema, venous insufficiency, combing and excoriation. Varicose eczema is manifested by local reddening of the skin, peeling and severe itching. If during treatment is not started, varicose eczema spreads rapidly and leads to more serious complications.

Bleeding from a varicose ulcer or nide is a formidable complication when, against the background of carious disease, a rupture of small varicose “nodes” occurs. Bleeding can occur due to mechanical damage, since the wall of the varicose “nodes” is thinned and very fragile, even the slightest “friction” can cause profuse venous bleeding.

If bleeding occurs from a varicose vein, it is necessary:

The sooner a varicose veins are detected and the fight against it begins, the faster and more effective is the elimination of the problem.

Any complication of varicose veins can be prevented if, in a timely manner, with the first symptoms of varicose veins, consult a vascular surgeon or phlebologist and follow all recommendations for prevention and treatment.
