Artery stenting
05 apr 2017
In an era of rapid development of medical technology, peripheral artery stenting is the most effective procedure in the treatment of patients with chronic obliterating diseases of the lower limb arteries. Artery stenting is a minimally invasive procedure and does not require anesthesia. The essence of this technique is to restore the patency of the occluded (clogged) section of the artery without cutting the skin by intravascular implantation of the stent (metal frame made of nitinol). Nitinol or titanium nickelide is a unique alloy with a “shape memory", which is 55% nickel and 45% titanium, this alloy is not magnetized and is not detected by metal detectors. Stent implantation in arteries is possible not only with vascular occlusion, but also with stenosis (narrowing) of peripheral arteries. There are a large number of types and forms of stents, for each patient and in each individual case the most suitable type of stent is selected. Since all stents are in sterile vacuum packaging, the risk of stent rejection or suppuration after implantation in the affected area of the artery is 0%.
The artery stenting technique is as follows:
- local skin anesthesia is performed;
- through a puncture of the skin on the thigh (less than 3 mm) an introducer is introduced into the lumen of the femoral artery (a special plastic “port tube”);
- through the introducer sheath, special tools and the stent itself are inserted into the lumen of the artery, which is installed in the place of the clogged section of the artery.
Endovascular stenting is a painless procedure; therefore, the patient is always conscious and constantly maintains a dialogue with the surgeon. Immediately after stenting, the patient is transferred to the general ward and in a day can walk independently, without pain and any discomfort in the legs. This procedure does not require the patient to stay in the intensive care unit and serious medication in the form of droppers, etc., postoperative treatment consists of taking tablets and lifestyle modifications.
At what diseases stenting is possible:
- atherosclerosis obliterans of the lower extremities;
- occlusion and / or ileal artery stenosis;
- occlusion and / or stenosis of the femoral artery;
- occlusion and / or stenosis of the leg arteries;
- peripheral arterial thrombosis;
- diabetic angiopathy and diabetic foot;
- occlusion and / or stenosis of the arteries of the upper limbs;
- carotid stenosis;
- occlusion and / or stenosis of the subclavian artery.
If you have been diagnosed with one of the above diseases, you should immediately consult a vascular surgeon. After a comprehensive examination, you will be offered the most optimal type of treatment and prevention of the progression of atherosclerosis.
